Passive vocabulary: why you know a word but do not use it

How to move familiar words from recognition into active speech.

To know does not mean to remember

If a word is clear in the text, it is in the passive dictionary. For speech this is not enough: the word must be quickly remembered along with a typical phrase and situation.

Isolated cards provide a sense of progress, but do not always create skill in use. It is more important to return to the word in a few sentences of your own.

Add context and voice

After a new word, make up one truthful phrase about yourself and say it. Then change the tense, question, or subject. So the word appears in different forms, not just in the original card.

Repeat the material at increasing intervals. Between repetitions, try to remember the phrase yourself first, rather than immediately opening the hint.

How to measure results

Count not the number of words you looked at, but the number of words you used in your oral answers. This is a more honest indicator of active vocabulary.

In SpeakRole, new words lead to phrases, sentences and vocal practice - this makes it easier to see what has truly become part of speech.
